Ingredients

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1/2 cup molasses
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 cup hot water

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Grease and flour an 8 inch square baking pan.

  3. Beat shortening at medium speed with an electric mixer until light and fluffy; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs and molasses, mixing well.

  4. Combine flour and next 4 ingredients; add to shorting mixture alternately with flour mixture.

  5. Mix after each addition.

  6. Pour batter into prepared pan.

  7. Bake for 30 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

  8. Serve topped with whipped cream.
