Ingredients

1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg, separated
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour, sifted
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup chopped nuts

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Grease cookie pans, set aside.

  3. Mix together shortening, sugar, egg yolk, vanilla.

  4. Blend in flour, salt; make into balls; dip in slightly beaten egg white, then roll in nuts.

  5. Place on cookie sheets about 2 inches apart.

  6. Bake for 5-8 minutes.

  7. As soon as cookies are done, press thumbprint into cookie and let cool.

  8. Ice cookies when cooled.
